OpenAI now lets you choose the “personality” of your AI, giving you more control over how responses sound and feel.

The new personality options let you select a tone that carries through the entire chat. 

Instead of rewriting every prompt to say “keep it short” or “explain with humor,” you can choose a setting that does it for you. 

Options today include Robot, Cynic, Listener, and Nerd. They don’t change what ChatGPT can do but they do change how it communicates. 

The feature is small in scope yet significant for anyone who values consistent tone in writing, teaching, or workplace communication.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Here's how to do it.

Web or Desktop (Plus, Pro, Team plans)

1. Go to www.ChatGPT.com and log in.
2. Click your profile picture in the lower corner.
3. Select Customize ChatGPT or open Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions.
4. In “What personality should ChatGPT have?” choose Robot, Cynic, Listener, or Nerd.
5. Save and start a new chat. 
6. The change applies only in new sessions.

iOS and Android

1. Open the app (iOS / Android), tap your profile, then Personalization → Custom Instructions.
2. Turn on custom instructions and pick your personality.
3. As with desktop, the personality is applied only in new chats.
