Give Your Contacts Nicknames (and Boost Productivity While You’re At It)

Give Your Contacts Nicknames (and Boost Productivity While You’re At It)

Assigning nicknames in your iPhone or Android contacts lets voice assistants and messaging apps use the names you actually use, saving time, reducing confusion, and making interactions feel more human.

By Rodger Mansfield, Technology Editor
August 2, 2025

Contact icon
Ever whispered “Call Mom” to your phone and watched Siri stumble, or seen “Jonathan Doe” in your message feed when you only think “Jon”?

It’s jarring and unnecessary.

Using nicknames in your contacts finally bridges the gap between what you say and what your device displays.

It’s a small tweak, but for anyone juggling family, clients, or teammates, it pays off in saved taps and reduced friction.

Use Nicknames in Phone Contacts

What Is It and Why It Matters

Nickname support in contact cards allows you to store an alternate name that surfaces instead of the full legal name in apps like Messages, Mail, Siri, and Google Assistant.

For professionals and educators, this means faster recognition (e.g. "Coach" instead of "Ernie Pantusso") and smoother voice‑driven interactions like “Text Boss” or “Call Vera.”

What You’ll Gain
  • Save time by using names you actually speak.
  • Reduce misdials or message confusion.
  • Boost voice‑assistant reliability.

Step‑by‑Step Instructions

Here's how to do it.

iOS (iPhone / iPad)
  1. Open Contacts, tap a contact, then tap Edit.
  2. Scroll and tap Add Field → Nickname; enter your nickname.
  3. Go to Settings → Contacts → Short Name and enable Prefer Nicknames.
  4. Now in Messages, Mail, and Siri commands like “Call Honest Abe” or “Text Smitty” you’ll see the nickname.
Add Nickname Field to iPhone Contacts

fig. 2 - Example of Nickname in iPhone Contacts

Android / Google Contacts
  1. Open Contacts in Gmail or the Google Contacts app in browser/desktop.
  2. Edit the contact; find More fields or Name fields to add a Nickname field.
  3. On your phone, open Google Assistant Settings → You → Your People; add that contact, assign relationship and nickname then save (Household contacts must be enabled).
  4. Launch voice commands: “Hey Google, call Honest Abe” will match your nickname.
Add Nickname to Google Contacts
fig. 3 - Add Nickname to Google Contacts

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Makes voice control smoother: devices understand “Mom” or “Coach” right away.
  • Cleaner, friendlier message threads and emails.
  • Personalizes communication without losing legal names.

Cons:
  • iOS doesn’t show nicknames in Phone app caller ID for incoming calls (nicknames appear in Messages/Mail) which some users find inconsistent.
  • Android may ignore “File As” or nickname display in some dialers or third‑party apps.
  • Requires upkeep: if you change phones or accounts, settings can reset.

Score

Score   Criterion   Justification

Value (8/10):
Directly solves recognition and voice‑assistant friction in everyday workflows.

Usability (7/10):
Simple in iOS and Assistant, though setup in Google Contacts and Assistant roles adds friction.

Wow Factor (6/10):
Not flashy but it’s one of those subtle touches that makes tech feel more personal and intuitive.

Total: 21/30 → 👍 Good. Worth adopting for most users.

Key Takeaways

Using nicknames makes interaction with your phone feel smarter and more natural.

You spend fewer seconds hunting through real names, and voice commands become more reliable.

For productivity enthusiasts, it’s a low-effort tweak with notable payoff.

Digital Detox for Thanksgiving: Reclaim Your Peace of Mind This Holiday

Digital Detox for Thanksgiving: Reclaim Your Peace of Mind This Holiday

Discover why Thanksgiving is the perfect time to unplug from digital distractions and reconnect with loved ones. This Cool Tip explains how to implement a simple digital detox, its benefits, and how to make it work for you.

By Rodger Mansfield, Technology Editor
November 28, 2024

Turkey Mobile Phone
Are You Ready to Reconnect This Thanksgiving?

Does the constant hum of notifications keep pulling you away from your family?

Are you more attached to your phone than to the stories being shared around the dinner table?

Thanksgiving presents the perfect opportunity to break free from digital distractions and refocus on what truly matters—connection, gratitude, and presence.

Here's a Cool Tip:  Take a Digital Detox.

A digital detox doesn't just restore balance; it also fosters mindfulness, improves relationships, and reduces stress.

Here's how you can take advantage of Thanksgiving to embrace a healthier relationship with technology.

The holiday season is about reconnecting—with ourselves and with those around us.

By deliberately stepping away from screens during Thanksgiving, you make space for meaningful conversations, shared laughter, and memories that no app can replicate.

Take a Digital Detox This Thanksgiving

fig. 1 - Take a Digital Detox This Thanksgiving

Here's how to do it.

Set Expectations
  • Let friends and family know in advance that you'll be limiting screen time. Use this as an opportunity to encourage others to join the detox.
Create a Tech-Free Zone
  • Designate the dining table, living room, or another key gathering area as a no-phone zone. Place a decorative basket nearby for everyone to stow their devices.

Use Do Not Disturb or Focus Modes
  • Configure your smartphone to silence non-urgent notifications. Both iOS and Android devices offer features to limit distractions during specific times.

Leverage Screen Time Tracking Apps
  • Tools like Apple's Screen Time or Android's Digital Wellbeing can help you monitor and control your device usage.

Plan Offline Activities
  • Organize board games, a group walk, or cooking together to keep everyone engaged without screens.

Set Time-Limited Check-ins
  • Allow short, scheduled moments to check for urgent communications, then put devices away.

A Thanksgiving digital detox has clear benefits: improved mental health, stronger family bonds, and reduced stress.

Yet, it comes with challenges, particularly the "fear of missing out" (FOMO) or anxiety over missing important messages.

Overcoming these requires preparation and a commitment to the detox’s intent—reclaiming connection over convenience.

Configuration Guide

For iOS Users:
  1. Go to Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb to schedule tech-free hours.
  2. Enable App Limits in Screen Time to restrict social media access.

For Android Users:
  1. Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls to configure focus modes and pause apps.
Anyone can try a Thanksgiving digital detox.

It’s particularly helpful for families, groups hosting gatherings, and anyone feeling overwhelmed by screen time.

Thanksgiving offers a rare chance to disconnect from the digital noise and reconnect with loved ones.

By embracing a digital detox, you create space for gratitude, presence, and authentic interaction. The benefits of unplugging go far beyond the holiday—it’s a gift that keeps on giving.

How will you approach your digital detox this Thanksgiving?

Share your plans or success stories in the comments below, and don’t forget to share this article with friends and family who might benefit!

Remove Metadata
Have you ever wondered if your photos reveal more than just a pretty picture?

Unbeknownst to many, your smartphone photos often contain hidden metadata – information about when and where the photo was taken, what camera was used, and sometimes even GPS coordinates.

While seemingly harmless, this metadata can be a privacy concern.

What if you want to share a photo online without revealing your exact location?

Here's a cool tip.   Remove the meta data from your photos.

That's where the ability to remove metadata becomes essential.

Here's how to do it.

Android:
  1. Launch the Google Photos app on your Android device.
  2. Find and open the photo from which you want to remove the metadata.
  3. Tap on the three dots (more options) at the top right corner of the screen.
  4. Select "Info" (or swipe up on the photo).
  5. If you only want to remove the location data, tap on the "Remove location" option.

iPhone:
  1. Open the Photos app
  2. Open the photo you want to remove location metadata from.
  3. Tap the Info button  or swipe up.
  4. You’ll see an image in the Maps app showing where the photo was taken.
  5. To remove the location metadata, tap Adjust.
  6. Tap No Location.

Turn Your Favorite Websites into Desktop and Mobile Apps

By Rodger Mansfield, Technology Editor
May 23, 2024

WPA
Ever wish your favorite websites felt more like native applications, unburdened by browser tabs and toolbars?

Here's a Col Tip.  Install a web page as a standalone app!

Both Chrome and Edge on both desktop and mobile devices offer a simple solution: the ability to install web pages as standalone apps.

This not only declutters your browsing but also can enhance performance and offer a more focused experience.

Here's how to do it on desktop PCs.

Desktop - Chrome:
  1. Open the website you want to install.
  2. Click the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
  3. Hover over "More tools" and select "Save, share and cast"
  4. Select "Install page as app."
  5. Enter a name for the app, select "Install.""
  6. Select the option to "pin" to your taskbar.

Install WPA - Desktop Google Chrome

Desktop - Edge:
  1. Open the desired website.
  2. Click the three-dot menu and select "Apps."
  3. Click "Install this site as an app."
  4. Choose a name and click "Install."
  5. Select if you want to "pin to taskbar" or create a desktop icon.
  6. Your new app will be listed under the "Apps" listing.

Installing Desktop WPA Using Microsoft Edge
fig. 2 - Installing Desktop WPA Using Microsoft Edge

Here's how to install Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) on your Android phone.

Android - Chrome
  1. Launch the Chrome browser on your Android device.
  2. Visit the website you want to install as a PWA.
  3. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner.
  4. Select "Add to Home screen" (or sometimes it's labeled "Install app").
  5. A pop-up will appear, confirm the app's name and tap "Add" or "Install."
  6. The PWA icon will appear on your home screen like any other app.

Android - Edge
  1. Launch the Microsoft Edge browser.
  2. Go to the website you want to install as a PWA.
  3. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner.
  4. Tap on "Apps" in the menu.
  5. Select the option to install the site as an app.
  6. Confirm the app's name and tap "Install."
  7. The PWA will be added to your app list, accessible through the Edge Apps page (edge://apps).
Important Notes:
  • Not every website offers a PWA version. You'll typically see an "Add to Home Screen" prompt or a similar indication if it's available.
  • PWAs update automatically in the background, ensuring you always have the latest version.
  •  Some PWAs offer offline functionality, allowing you to use them even without an internet connection.

Here's how to install WPAs on an iPhone.

iPhone - Chrome
  1. Launch the Chrome browser on your iPhone.
  2. Visit the website you want to save as a pseudo-app.
  3. Tap the Share button at the bottom of the screen (it looks like a square with an arrow pointing up).
  4. Scroll through the options and tap "Add to Home Screen."
  5. You can edit the name of the app.
  6. "Add" in the top right corner.
  7. The website's icon will appear on your home screen, launching it in a standalone Chrome window when tapped.

iPhone - Edge
  1. Launch the Microsoft Edge browser.
  2. Go to the website you want to save.
  3. Tap the Share button at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Select "Add to Home Screen."
  5. Edit the name.
  6. Tap "Add" in the top right corner.
  7. The website icon will be added to your home screen, launching a standalone Edge window when tapped.
Important Notes:
  • These aren't technically full PWAs like on Android, but they offer a similar experience of opening a website in its own window without browser UI elements.
  • Limitations:
    • They may not offer offline capabilities or background syncing like true PWAs.
    • Some features of the website might be limited.
    • If a website offers a dedicated iOS app, that's usually a better option for a more integrated experience.

For desktop or mobile, find the icon where the app was saved and select to open.

Installing web pages as apps in Chrome and Edge is a powerful way to personalize your digital workspace and elevate your browsing experience.

By taking a few simple steps, you can enjoy the benefits of both worlds – the convenience of the web and the streamlined focus of applications.

Have you tried installing web pages as apps?

Which websites have you found most useful in this format?

Share your experiences and tips in the comments below!
