Select an Entire Excel Spreadsheet

There are several ways to select the entire contents of an Excel spreadsheet.

Do you know them all?

You can select the contents:

• Press Ctrl + A
• Select Edit then Select All from the menu (older versions of Excel)
• Click the gray square in the top-left corner of the spreadsheet (above the number 1 and to the left of the letter A)

Why select the entire spreadsheet?  You might need to copy to another spreadsheet.  Or want to adjust the formatting such as font and size.  Or you might want to adjust column or row size by clicking on the column/row dividers.

Note: When you Crtl+A in a cell with adjoining cells that have content, the region will be selected first.  To select the entire spreadsheet, just Ctrl+A again.

Dictate in Google Docs with Voice Typing

Do you ever get tired of typing a document?

Let the power of Google do it for you.

Google Docs, the online word processing software, just got a whole lot better with the ability to dictate a word processing document.

The new feature is "Voice Typing" and requires Google's Chrome browser.

To dictate, enable Voice Typing in the Tools menu.

While dictating, you can stop and use the keyboard or mouse to correct an error.  Just insert the cursor where you want to restart and resume speaking to continue to voice type.

Key phrases and commands can be used to create punctuation: "Period" "Comma" "Exclamation point" "Question mark" "New line" and "New paragraph"

Google Docs can be downloaded to Microsoft Word format for future editing.

Let Stephen Colbert Give You Driving Directions

Are you tired of listening to your regular GPS voice when you drive?

Now you can let Stephen Colbert give you turn-by-turn driving directions with the Waze app.

In a bid to publicize his new late-night talk show on CBS, Colbert can now be chosen as a voice in Waze.

Colbert joins well-known celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Colonel Sanders who have provided the driving instructions voice in Waze.

To choose Colbert as your voice option, open the Waze app, go to settings, and select Sounds.  Click to select Stephen Colbert.


But don't wait too long, Stephen's voice will end on September 22, 2015.

Track Real Time Flight Status with FlightRadar24

The world aviation industry is amazing.  Thousands of flights around the world every day take off and land every day.

Air Traffic Control centers around the world keep track of these flights.

How can you see this information?

We've already told you the very cool Siri trick to find out about airplanes above you.

A great way to see this visually is to use the FlightRadar24 service.

The website is available at http://www.flightradar24.com .

You can search for airports or drag the map screen around to watch flights represented by airplanes on the screen.

Click on a plane and information regarding the flight will display.

Key info such as a airlines, flight number, departure airport, arrive airport, scheduled and actual departure time, scheduled and estimated arrival time, aircraft maker and type, registration, altitude, speed, and location are provided.

FlightRadar24 is also available for a number of mobile devices, including:

Open Task Manager FAST With this Quick Trick

Do you have a program that is non-responding in Windows?

The Task Manager app is the best tool to exit a non-responding program.  The Task Manager displays programs, processes and services that are currently running on your computer.  You can use Task Manager to check your PC's performance too.  And...close down an application that has frozen.

We've all usually opened the Task Manager by using the ALT-CTRL+DELETE (the three finger Windows salute!) to get to the security screen and then choosing the Task Manager option.

There is a much faster way.

Press and hold   CTRL + SHIFT + ESC

That will launch the Task Manager.

How to Close an Application that is Not Responding

And what about that pesky frozen application?  Click on the desired application (status should say "Not Responding") on the Processes tab, right mouse-click and then select "End Task".

How to Listen to Great Podcasts on Your Phone or Computer

Listening to great podcasts has become a whole lot easier with better shows and easier to use apps.

You can listen to podcasts via a website, a PC file or through mobile apps for Apple's iPhone and Google's Android smart phones.

But first, what is a Podcast?  Here is how Apple defines a Podcast:

"Podcasts are episodes of a program available on the Internet. Podcasts are usually original audio or video recordings, but can also be recorded broadcasts of a television or radio program, a lecture, a performance, or other event."

Podcasts are available from thousands of source, including NPR, Fox News, USA Today and others.

So how can you find podcasts?

Many popular TV and radio shows have podcasts.  Even newspapers and reporters have podcasts. You can often find their podcast links on their websites.  For example, USA Today has a podcast section, as does NPR.  Next time you are on a site, look to see if they have podcasts available.

There are also podcast directories.  The best is the Apple iTunes directory (search from within the computer app or phone app.  See below).  Search iTunes to discover podcasts from a variety of sources.  Another good online directory is Podcast Directory.

So how can you listen to podcasts?

There are numerous ways to listen to podcasts: Websites, PC files and iPhone and Android smart phones.

Let's look at each.

Website

An easy way to listen to a podcast on a Windows or Mac computer is through a web browser at the podcast site.

For example, to listen to The One Cool Tip Show, listeners can use the podcast player on the podcast hosting site, Podomatic,

Pressing the "Play" button will play the episode through the computer's speakers via the web browser.

Besides the podcast website, you can also listen to podcasts through online streaming and radio websites such as Tunein Radio, Stitcher Radio and PlayerFM.  Visit each site, search for your podcasts and enjoy listening via the web!

Another way to listen on a PC or Mac is through using the iTunes program.

First, be sure that the iTunes application is installed.  If not, click HERE to download.

After iTunes is installed, open and search for your favorite podcast or subject.

If the show is listed in iTunes (like The One Cool Tip Show), the episodes will be in the search results.

Click on the episode number to start listening.  Once the podcast is playing, you can also click the "View" icon at the top of iTunes to visit the podcasts page where you can rate and review the podcast.

PC File

Besides using a web browser or iTunes on a computer, users can listen to a podcast on a PC by downloading the audio file to the PC.  Podcasts generally will allow users to download the audio file, usually an mp3 file, directly to the computer.

Just look for the download link on the podcast site:

Press the "Download" link and save the file to your PC or Mac.  Once downloaded, open the audio file and it will play with the default audio player.

iPhone and Android Smart Phones

The most popular way listeners enjoy podcasts are via smart phones.  Apple makes it easy with the Podcast app on the iPhone.

But there are many easy-to-use podcast apps.  Just search in the app store for Podcast.  Download the episodes you want to listen to and you can listen even when you are offline.  This is great when you are commuting.

Radio and Streaming sites such as Tunein Radio and Stitcher Radio also have quality apps that play podcasts.    Try the Tunein Radio and Stitcher Radio apps in the Google Play store since they are free to get started.

Use this Siri Trick to Call Someone

When reading an email, do you often just want to call the sender rather than sending a long written reply?

You could look the person up in your contacts and call them.

But why do that when you have the power of Siri on your iPhone?

You don't even have to call out the person's name.

When reading an email on your iPhone, just press the home button and tell Siri to "Call him" or "Call her".

Siri will look up the number and make the call for you.
