Don't Lose Your Voice: How Apple's Personal Voice Feature Can Preserve Your Speech (And How to Use It)

Or perhaps you know someone who is facing that challenge. 

Here's a Cool Tip.  Record and use Apple's Personal Voice feature. 

Imagine being able to type a message and have it spoken aloud in your own voice, even if your voice is no longer available. 

Here's how to do it.

You'll need to do three things:  
  1. Record Your Personal Voice
  2. Turn Your Personal Voice On/Off
  3. Use Your Personal Voice




1. Record Your Personal Voice
  • Check Compatibility: Ensure your iPhone or iPad is running iOS 17 or later, and your Mac is on macOS Sonoma or later.

On an iPhone or iPad
  1. Open the Settings app. 

  2. Tap Accessibility.

  3. Tap Personal Voice.

  4. Tap Create a Personal Voice.

  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to record your voice.

  6. It will take 15-20 minutes to record your sample voice.

To pause your recording session:

1. Tap Done or close the Settings app
2. Your progress is saved.

To resume a recording session:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Personal Voice.

  2. Tap the Personal Voice that you want to continue creating.

  3. Tap Continue Recording, then follow the onscreen instructions.

On a Mac

  1. Choose Apple menu 🍎 > System Settings, click Accessibility in the sidebar, then click Personal Voice.

  2. Click Create a Personal Voice.

  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to record your voice.


To pause your recording session:

  1. Click Done
  2. Your progress is saved.

To resume a recording session:

  1. Choose Apple menu 🍎 > System Settings, click Accessibility in the sidebar, then click Personal Voice.

  2. Click the Show Detail button  (i) next to the Personal Voice that you want to continue creating.

  3. Tap Continue Recording, then follow the onscreen instructions.



2. Turn Your Personal Voice on/Off

On your iPhone or iPad
  1. Open the Settings app. Tap Accessibility, then tap Live Speech.
  2. Turn Live Speech on or off.
On your Mac
  1. Choose Apple menu 🍎 > System Settings, click Accessibility in the sidebar, then click Live Speech.
  2. Turn Live Speech on or off.

On your Apple Watch
  1. Open the Settings app. Tap Accessibility, then tap Live Speech.
  2. Turn Live Speech on or off.

3. Use Your Personal Voice

On your iPhone or iPad
  1. Make sure that Live Speech is on.
  2. Triple-click the side button. (If you have an Accessibility Shortcut set up, tap Live Speech.)
  3. Enter the text that you want spoken aloud, then tap Send.

To quickly use a saved favorite phrase.

  1. Tap the Phrases button

  2. Tap the phrase that you want spoken aloud.

On your Mac
  1. Make sure that Live Speech is on.

  2. Click the Type to Speak text field in the Live Speech window.

  3. Enter the text that you want spoken aloud, then click the Speak button or press Return.


To quickly use a saved favorite phrase:  

  1. Click the Show Saved Phrases button.

  2. Select the phrase that you want spoken aloud.

  3. Click the Speak button.

To hide or show the Live Speech window, click the Live Speech icon in the menu bar.


On your Apple Watch
  1. Make sure that Live Speech is on.

  2. Triple-click the Digital Crown. (If you have an Accessibility Shortcut set up, tap Live Speech.)

  3. Enter the text that you want spoken aloud, then tap Send.
