Frustrated by slow downloads or buffering videos?
Here's a Cool Tip. Use the new FCC Mobile Speed Test app to check your internet speed.
The new Mobile Speed Test app aims to empower consumers by providing accurate, actionable data about their internet connections.
What is the FCC Mobile Speed Test App?
The FCC Mobile Speed Test app is a free mobile application available for both Android and iOS devices.
It allows users to measure their internet speeds (both download and upload) and report that data directly to the FCC.
This app isn't just about personal curiosity.
The App offers two speed test options for testing mobile broadband availability and speeds: Crowdsource Speed Tests and Challenge Speed Tests.
- Challenge Speed Tests are submitted to the FCC and may be used to dispute, or “challenge,” coverage data submitted by providers as part of the Broadband Data Collection (BDC) and shown on the FCC’s National Broadband Map.
- A Crowdsource Test allows you to test the speed of a mobile connection at a given place and time. Crowdsource Tests help the FCC evaluate mobile coverage across the United States and may help the FCC to verify the accuracy of the National Broadband Map.
Here's how to do it.
- Search for "FCC Mobile Speed Test" in the App Store or Google Play Store and download.
- Launch the app.
- Select Challenge or Crowdsource Speed Test.
- For Challenge tests, be sure Wi-fi is turned off.
- Tap the "Start Test" button.
- Enter Contact Information, accept terms and select "Confirm & Continue".
- Select where you are taking the test: Indoor, Outdoor or In-Vehicle.
- The app measures your download and upload speeds.
- Select "Test Again" to redo the test.
- Share Data (Optional): Select the option to share your results.
The data collected plays a crucial role in:
- Improving Broadband Maps: Accurate maps are essential for identifying areas with inadequate service.
- Holding Providers Accountable: Data will help the FCC ensure providers are delivering on their promised speeds.
- Informing Policy Decisions: Reliable data will drive policy changes aimed at expanding and improving broadband access.
Feeling like your internet provider isn't holding up their end of the bargain?
This app puts power back in your hands.
And, every time you test your speed, you're actually contributing to a bigger picture, helping the FCC gather data to push for better broadband access for everyone.
While the FCC Speed Test app is a powerful tool, it's not without limitations.
It only captures a snapshot of your internet speed at a particular time.
Your results might vary depending on the age of your device, signal strength, and even what other devices are using the network
But, even with these limitations, the data collected is still incredibly valuable for understanding the bigger picture of broadband performance.
The FCC Speed Test app is a powerful tool for consumers. By testing your speed and sharing your data, you're not just checking your connection—you're helping to build a better, faster internet for everyone.
