Ever wanted to add captions to your videos?

But didn't want to transcribe them yourself?

Here's a Cool Tip.  Use the new Google Drive Auto captioning.

Google Drive's new auto-captioning feature is a game-changer.

Google Drive is a cloud-based storage and file-sharing service developed by Google. It allows users to store files online, synchronize them across devices, and share them easily with others.

By automatically transcribing the audio in your videos, Google makes your content more accessible, engaging, and searchable.

Here's how to do it.
  1. Open Google Drive, https://drive.google.com/
  2. Upload a video file or find the video you want to caption.
  3. Either right-click on the video file or use the three-dot menu when the video is playing.
  4. Select "File Information."
  5. Select "Manage caption tracks."
  6. Choose "Generate automatic captions."
  7. To view your captions, watch your video.
  8. Be sure to click the Subtitles/Closed Captioning icon to display the captioning.

Captions make your videos accessible to viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as those in noisy environments or who prefer to watch videos silently.

While Google's speech recognition technology is advanced, it's not perfect.

Captions might contain errors, especially for videos with accents, technical jargon, or background noise.

Google Drive's auto-captioning feature is available to both personal Google Account users and Google Workspace users, but with a slight difference:

  • Personal Google Accounts: Users need to manually request automatic captions after uploading a video to Drive.
  • Google Workspace: Captions are enabled automatically upon video upload, unless an administrator has disabled the feature.
Google Drive's auto-captioning feature is a significant step towards greater video accessibility and inclusivity.

By automating the captioning process, Google empowers creators to reach a wider audience and make their content more engaging and informative.

While the technology is still evolving, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

Take advantage of this feature to enhance your videos and make your content accessible to everyone.
