You Don't Have to Tell the World on Facebook

Facebook logo
Did you just break up?  Or finalize a divorce?

You don't have to tell all of your friends on Facebook that it has happened.  You can make the change on Facebook but do so in a way that Facebook doesn't automatically send out a status update that your relationship has changed.

Here's how.

Go to your profile and then click on About and then Family and Relationships (on the left side).

Under Relationship, you'll see the current setting, Friends or even Public.  Change this setting to Only Me.

Facebook relationship about

Now you can make your relationship status change.  That's because only you will see the change.

At some time in the future, come back to the Relationship and change your setting back to Friends.

No one will be the wiser.

Use Google to Search for Specific File Types

Google logo
Google is full of amazing features.

One of the best is the ability to search for specific documents based upon file types.

Perhaps you are looking for a Power Point (ppt or pptx) or an Adobe Acrobat file (pdf).

With Google, you can search for these files types, plus a whole lot more.

To do so, just type filetype:xxx search terms where xxx is the document type you are searching.

For example, to search for PDFs concerning Hillary Clinton, enter
filetype:pdf Hillary Clinton into Google:

Search result will return the desired documents.

Google indexes a number of common file types including:

  • Adobe Portable Document Format (.pdf)
  • Microsoft Excel (.xls, .xlsx)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx)
  • Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx)
  • Rich Text Format (.rtf, .wri)

In addition, a number of technical and lesser-known file types are also indexed and searchable:

  • Adobe Flash (.swf)
  • Adobe PostScript (.ps)
  • Autodesk Design Web Format (.dwf)
  • Google Earth (.kml, .kmz)
  • GPS eXchange Format (.gpx)
  • Hancom Hanword (.hwp)
  • HTML (.htm, .html, other file extensions)
  • OpenOffice presentation (.odp)
  • OpenOffice spreadsheet (.ods)
  • OpenOffice text (.odt)
  • Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg)
  • TeX/LaTeX (.tex)
  • Text (.txt, .text, other file extensions), including source code in common programming languages:Basic source code (.bas)
  • C/C++ source code (.c, .cc, .cpp, .cxx, .h, .hpp)
  • C# source code (.cs)
  • Java source code (.java)
  • Perl source code (.pl)
  • Python source code (.py)
  • Wireless Markup Language (.wml, .wap)
  • XML (.xml)

You can also use the Google Advanced Search page to limit your search to several options including filetypes.

However, not all searchable file types are available in the dropdown filetype list.

Enjoy!

Google Now Shows Twitter in Desktop Search Results

Google
Searching on Google now brings even more relevant, real-time, search results.

How?

Google now shows relevant Twitter "tweets" in desktop search results.

This new feature is an expansion of Google already displaying Twitter search results in Google mobile search results.

The new desktop feature works for all queries performed in English.

For example, a search for "Donald Trump" returns a recent tweet from the verified account of Donald Trump, @realDonaldTrump.

Google Search Donald Trump with Twitter Results

This move benefits both Google and Twitter.  For Google, it means that users get real-time search results from the micro-blogging service.  For Twitter, it brings its service to millions of new users.

Enjoy!

Shake to Undo on iPhone

iOS 8
Oops.  Did you just accidentally delete or archive an email on your iPhone?

You can undo that.

Just shake, shake, shake.

iPhone Shake Undo Archive

Many apps let you shake to UNDO the last action.

You can also shake your iPhone when you type to UNDO or REDO typing in most apps.

iPhone Shake Undo Typing

But like most good things, it can have a downside.  Some users report that their iPhones constantly try to undo actions and display the pop-up alert.  This is caused by excess shaking of the iPhone.

There's no on/off switch in iOS 8 or earlier.  But iOS 9 will have an option to toggle this feature on or off.

Enjoy!
