This Week in Scams - September 5, 2026

🚨Your Driver's License Data May Be Worth More Than You Think🚨

A recent security report highlights concerns about online services that allegedly sell access to large databases of driver's license information, underscoring how valuable personal data has become to criminals.

Information from a driver's license can be used for identity theft, financial fraud, account takeovers, and other scams.

Even if you have never lost your license, your information may have been exposed through a data breach or third-party service.

To protect yourself, monitor your credit reports regularly, be cautious about sharing photos of your license online, and watch for unexpected financial accounts or verification requests in your name.

Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit file if you believe your personal information may have been compromised.

The more valuable your personal data becomes, the more important it is to treat it like cash and guard it carefully.

🚨Before You Scan That QR Code, Take a Closer Look🚨

QR codes make it easy to pay for parking, access menus, and complete purchases, but scammers are using them too.

The FTC warns that criminals have been placing fake QR code stickers over legitimate ones, especially on parking meters, to send people to fraudulent websites designed to steal money and personal information.

Before scanning any QR code, check for signs that a sticker may have been placed over an original code and review the web address before opening it.

Be alert for misspellings, unusual website names, or anything that seems out of place.

Keep your phone and apps updated, use strong passwords, and enable multi-factor authentication to help protect your accounts.

If you think you scanned a fake QR code, change any affected passwords immediately and review your bank and credit card transactions for suspicious activity.

🚨The Car Dealership Website Might Be Fake🚨

Shopping for a car online?

The FTC warns that scammers are creating convincing fake dealership websites designed to steal money from buyers.

These sites may copy real dealer logos, vehicle photos, customer reviews, and even detailed purchase policies to appear legitimate.

Some scammers lure buyers with hard-to-find vehicles or deals that seem too good to pass up.

Before sending money, research the dealership, search for complaints, and verify that the vehicle and business are real.

If possible, see the car in person or arrange for an independent inspection.

Most importantly, walk away if the seller insists on payment by wire transfer only.

⚠️ This Phishing Scam Can Bypass Your Password⚠️

The FBI is warning consumers about a growing threat called consent phishing, a scam that tricks people into granting access to their accounts instead of stealing their passwords.

These attacks often arrive through email, text messages, or messaging apps and may appear to come from trusted organizations, event planners, media contacts, or government officials.

When users click the link and approve access, they can unknowingly give scammers permission to read emails, access sensitive data, and even send messages on their behalf.

What makes this scam especially dangerous is that changing your password may not immediately remove the access you granted.

Before approving any request to connect an app to your account, verify who sent it and only authorize applications you trust.

If something feels suspicious, stop and investigate before clicking "Allow."

🚨Don't Get Fooled by a Fake Health Portal Alert🚨

Cybercriminals are sending convincing text messages and emails that appear to come from popular healthcare portals such as MyChart, claiming you have new test results, billing issues, appointment updates, or even free health benefits waiting for you.

The goal is to trick you into clicking a link and entering passwords, personal information, insurance details, or payment information.

These messages often use familiar logos and healthcare language to create a sense of urgency and trust.

If you receive an unexpected healthcare notification, do not click the link.

Instead, open your provider's official app or type the healthcare organization's website address directly into your browser.

Remember that legitimate healthcare providers will not ask for your password or verification codes through email or text messages.

Taking a moment to verify a message could help protect both your personal information and your medical records.

⚠️ Before You Donate After a Disaster, Read This⚠️

When hurricanes, wildfires, floods, or other tragedies make headlines, scammers often see an opportunity.

The FBI warns that fake charities, fraudulent crowdfunding campaigns, and imposters posing as relief organizations frequently appear after major disasters.

These scams can arrive through social media, text messages, emails, phone calls, or even fake websites that look legitimate.

Before donating, stick with established organizations you know and trust, and take a few minutes to research any unfamiliar charity.

Be wary of groups with names that closely resemble well-known charities.

The FBI also advises against donating with cash, gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, since those payment methods are favorites among scammers.

When you give thoughtfully, your generosity is far more likely to reach the people who truly need help.

🚨Don't Fall for the Scams That Follow Breaking News🚨

Scammers move fast, and major news events often create new opportunities for fraud.

Following reports about Dolly Parton's death, cybercriminals quickly began creating fake social media accounts, fraudulent charity appeals, and misleading merchandise offers aimed at fans.

These scams often use emotional stories and urgent requests to encourage people to click links, donate money, or share personal information.

Whenever a celebrity, public figure, or major news story dominates headlines, be extra cautious before donating, buying commemorative products, or responding to social media posts.

Verify information through official websites and trusted organizations rather than links shared in comments or direct messages.

A good rule to remember is that scammers often exploit emotions, so slowing down and verifying before acting can help keep your money and information safe.

ISS Live
Need a peaceful break from the usual news cycle, meeting calendar, or endless social feed?

Here’s a Cool Tip: Open NASA’s ISS stream and turn your screen into a live window on Earth.

NASA offers a radically different view: live video of Earth from an external camera on the International Space Station.

You do not need a NASA account or special equipment.

Open the official stream in a modern web browser or the YouTube app, switch to full screen, and watch coastlines, clouds, city lights, sunrises, and sunsets pass beneath the station.

Because this is a genuine live feed from orbit, the picture sometimes turns black or gray.

That is part of the experience and does not necessarily mean the video is broken.

10 Siri Commands
You probably know that Siri can set a timer or tell you the weather.

Apple’s voice assistant can also create location-based reminders, share something displayed on your screen, play a podcast, start navigation, and explain how to use certain iPhone features.

Here’s a Cool Tip: Put Siri to work with these 10 time-saving commands.

These capabilities are especially helpful when you are driving, cooking, walking, or trying to capture a task before you forget it.

You can activate Siri by saying “Siri” or “Hey Siri,” pressing and holding the iPhone’s side button, or typing a request on supported devices.

Most commands covered here are established Siri capabilities, not features introduced exclusively in iOS 26.

However, iOS 26 combines these familiar commands with Apple Intelligence features such as Type to Siri, conversational follow-up requests, and Apple product knowledge on compatible devices.

Give Sensitive Documents Extra Protection in OneDrive

Give Sensitive Documents Extra Protection in OneDrive

OneDrive Personal Vault places sensitive files behind an additional identity check and locks them again after inactivity. It is a practical place for passport scans, tax records, insurance documents, and other files that deserve more protection than an ordinary cloud folder.

OneDrive Personal Vault
Your vacation photos and passport scan probably should not receive identical treatment.

Yet that is what can happen when everything lands in the same cloud storage account.

Your files may be protected by your Microsoft account, but an unlocked computer, shared device, or compromised session can still create an opportunity for someone to see more than you intended.

Here’s a Cool Tip: Move your most sensitive documents into Personal Vault, then lock it as soon as you finish using them.

OneDrive Personal Vault adds another checkpoint.

Before opening the protected folder, you must verify your identity using an available method such as a fingerprint, face, PIN, Microsoft Authenticator code, email code, or text message.

The vault also locks after inactivity, so its contents do not remain indefinitely accessible.

This is not a separate storage service or a replacement for good account security.

It is a protected area inside a personal OneDrive account, designed for files that deserve more care.

Put Your Google Drive Files to Work in ChatGPT

Put Your Google Drive Files to Work in ChatGPT

ChatGPT can work with accessible files in Google Drive, including Docs, Sheets, and Slides, without making you upload the same material for every task. Connect the Google Drive plugin, name the source you want, and turn stored information into summaries, comparisons, analyses, or new files.

ChatGPT Google Drive
You know the file exists.

The problem is remembering whether it lives in a Drive folder, a Google Doc, a planning Sheet, or last quarter’s Slides deck.

Finding it is only the first step.

You still need to read it, pull out the useful details, and turn those details into something new.

Here’s a Cool Tip: Connect Google Drive and turn stored files into finished work.

The Google Drive plugin for ChatGPT shortens that chain.

Once it is installed and connected, ChatGPT can use Drive content available to the connected account as source material for a task.

The plugin works across Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

You can ask for a specific document, refer to Google Drive with an @ mention, or describe the result you need and let ChatGPT choose the installed tool when appropriate.

This is more useful than a one-time file upload when your work depends on material that changes or when several related files live in Drive.

Availability depends on your ChatGPT plan, workspace settings, and the plugin itself. Managed-workspace administrators may restrict installation or access.

Most spreadsheet data ends up trapped in dense rows and columns that only make sense to the person who entered them.

When you want to share progress with team members, plan an event, or track assignments, raw grids often feel stiff, cluttered, and hard to navigate at a glance.

Here’s a Cool Tip: Use Sheets canvas to build interactive mini-apps directly on top of your existing spreadsheet data with a simple prompt.

Google introduced a fresh way to interact with your spreadsheet files called Sheets canvas. Instead of spending hours designing layout grids, nesting formulas, or configuring charts manually, you can tell the built-in Gemini side panel exactly what type of interface you want to see.

Staring at a cluttered inbox or a fragmented calendar first thing in the morning often derails productive momentum before work even starts.

Most voice assistants can set a single alarm or read the weather forecast, but they stumble when you ask them to handle complex, multi-step workflows across your apps.

Here’s a Cool Tip: Talk to Gemini Live like a personal assistant to triage your Gmail inbox and organize your calendar completely hands-free.

Google updated Gemini Live to bridge that gap.

Instead of treating voice as a simple command trigger, Gemini Live functions as an interactive delegate capable of managing emails, synthesizing schedules, and handing off complex tasks in the background through Google Workspace tools.

Explore NASA’s Universe Without Leaving Your Browser

Space exploration usually happens millions of miles away, but NASA offers an unusually engaging way to bring it onto your screen.

Here’s a Cool Tip: Tour the universe with NASA’s Eyes.

NASA’s Eyes is a collection of browser-based 3D visualizations built with NASA mission data, scientific observations, imagery, and spacecraft models. Instead of reading a static mission summary, you can rotate planets, change your viewpoint, follow spacecraft, move backward or forward through time, and examine objects from different angles.

The experience is free and runs in a modern web browser on computers, tablets, and phones. You do not need to download the old NASA’s Eyes desktop program or sign in to a NASA account to begin exploring.

Recover a Locked Apple Account the Right Way

Recover a Locked Apple Account the Right Way

A locked Apple Account can block access to iCloud, purchases, subscriptions, and other Apple services. The exact warning matters because Apple uses different recovery procedures for security locks, inactive accounts, and disabled Media & Purchases access.

Recover Locked Apple Account
You enter your Apple Account password, but instead of signing in, you see a warning that the account is locked, inactive, or disabled.

Trying the same password repeatedly usually will not solve the problem and could complicate recovery.

Here’s a Cool Tip: Match the warning to the correct recovery path.

Apple provides several recovery paths, but they are not interchangeable.

A security lock normally requires a password reset. A locked or inactive account may offer a Request Access button.

A disabled Media & Purchases account uses a separate reactivation process.

The important first step is to read the entire message before doing anything else.

Disable Windows 11 Startup icon
You turn on your PC expecting to get to work, but Windows spends the next few minutes launching apps you didn't even open.

If your computer feels sluggish immediately after sign-in, startup programs may be the reason.

Many applications automatically configure themselves to launch whenever you log into Windows.

While some are genuinely helpful, others consume memory, processor resources, and storage activity before you've even opened a browser.

Here's a Cool Tip: Disable high-impact startup apps you rarely use.

Startup applications can affect both startup speed and overall system performance.

By managing which apps launch automatically, you can reduce unnecessary background activity and create a cleaner, faster experience.

The good news is that Windows 11 includes several built-in tools that make startup management easy.
