Wish you could tell Google to fill in the blanks for you?

Here's a Cool Tip. Use the asterisk (*).

What the Asterisk Does in Google Search

The asterisk acts as a placeholder for one or more words within your search query.

Google treats it like a blank space, working hard to find the best matches.

Here's how to do it.
  • Go to http://www.Google.com .
  • Place the asterisk where you'd like Google to fill in the blanks.
  • Combine the asterisk with other words to give Google hints.
  • Try different asterisk placements for more targeted results.
* as a Wildcard Placeholder

Use this Cool Tip to recall partially remembered phrases, lyrics, or quotes.

Discover alternative wording or different forms of a phrase and search for topics broadly without focusing on specific keywords.

Here are a few real-life examples:
  • "To be or not to be * that is the question" (Finds the classic Hamlet quote)
  • "Computer programming for *" (Finds resources for any programming language)
  • "* Day Sale" (Finds deals related to various holidays)

The asterisk wildcard is a surprisingly powerful Google search tool.

Add it to your search arsenal to refine your results and discover information you didn't even know you were looking for.

Ready to supercharge your Google searches?

Try the asterisk wildcard now!

Tired of Phone Hold Hell? Google Labs Could Save Your Sanity on iPhone

Google's experimental 'Talk to a Live Representative' feature has the potential to streamline the dreaded customer service call experience, and it's now available to test on your iPhone.

March 16, 2024

Have you ever stared at your iPhone screen in frustration as the automated customer service voice drones on, leaving you stuck in an endless loop of menu options?

How much of your precious time has been wasted on hold, waiting for an actual human to help with your problem?

Here's a Cool Tip.  Try the Google Labs' 'Talk to a Live Representative' feature.

Google Labs, the company's hub of experimental features, is testing a new tool called 'Talk to a Live Representative'.

This game-changing feature aims to take on the headache of customer service calls.

It essentially waits on hold for you and notifies you once a live representative becomes available.

It is being tested on a variety of phone platforms.

In this case, let's look at the iPhone version.

Here's how to do it.

Talk to a Live Representative' on iPhone
  • Currently, the feature is in limited testing, so not everyone will have access immediately.
  • Tap the Google Labs icon on the iPhone Google App.
  • Toggle On the Talk to a Representative option.
  • Select "Try an Example".
  • Select an industry to get started.
  • Select a Company.

  • Select "Request a Call".

  • Specify the reason for your call, and provide your phone number.
  • Select "Request a Call".

  • Google's system will call the business, navigate the phone menus, and wait on hold for you.
  • You'll only receive a call back once a live agent is ready!

This cool Google Labs experiments saves time, reduces frustration, and is convenient to set up and use.

Imagine trying to contact your airline to reschedule a flight or reaching out to your internet provider about a service outage.

Instead of wasting precious minutes or hours on hold, 'Talk to a Live Representative' could take that burden off your shoulders.

While still experimental, Google's 'Talk to a Live Representative' feature has the potential to revolutionize how we handle customer service calls.

If you can access it, it's certainly worth a try to reclaim your time and sanity.

How to Use Google’s New ‘About This Image’ Feature

Have you ever come across an image online that looked too good to be true?

Or maybe you saw a photo that was used in a misleading or false context?

How can you tell if an image is reliable or not?

Here's a Cool Tip.  Use Google's New About This Image feature.

Google  recently launched a new feature called About This Image that can help you find more information about the images you see on the web.

This feature can help you check the credibility, context, and origin of an image, as well as whether it was generated or manipulated by artificial intelligence.

Here's how to do it.

From the three-dot menu in Google Search:
When you come across an image on Google Images or Google Search page, tap the three-dot menu on the top right corner and select About This Image.

Google will then tell you the background of the image so that you can check its credibility and context1.

Google About This Image
fig. 1 - Google About This Image

The About This Image feature provides you with four types of information about an image:
  1. When did Google first index the image and similar ones: This can help you determine how old the image is and whether it was published before or after a certain event.
  2. Where it may have first appeared: This can help you find the original source of the image and whether it is credible or not.
  3. Where else it’s been seen online: This can help you see how the image has been used on other websites, such as news, social media, and fact-checking sites. You can also compare how different sources present the same image and whether they are consistent or contradictory.
  4. Image metadata: This is information that image creators and publishers have added to an image, such as the title, description, author, date, location, etc. It also includes fields that may indicate whether AI has generated or enhanced the image. All Google AI-generated images have this markup in the original file.
Google About This Image Results
fig. 2 - Google About This Image Results

The ‘About This Image’ feature has several benefits for users:
  • It can help you spot fake images and misinformation by providing you with more context and sources about an image.
  • It can help you verify the authenticity and accuracy of an image by showing you when and where it was first published and how it has been used online.
  • It can help you find more information and related content about an image by showing you other websites that have displayed it.
  • It can help you give credit to the original creator or publisher of an image by showing you their name and website.
About This Image can help you find more information about the images you see on the web.

Be sure to check it out.

Enjoy!
