Stop Losing Your Windows Every Time You Reconnect a Monitor

Stop Losing Your Windows Every Time You Reconnect a Monitor

If you use a laptop with an external monitor, you've probably experienced windows scattered across the wrong screens after reconnecting your setup. Windows 11 includes a built-in feature that can automatically restore many windows to their previous locations, helping you get back to work faster.

You disconnect your laptop from a docking station, head to a meeting, and later reconnect everything at your desk.

Instead of jumping right back into work, you spend several minutes dragging Outlook, Excel, Teams, and browser windows back to the monitors where they belong.

Here's a Cool Tip: Turn on Remember Window Locations and let Windows put your apps back where they belong.

That annoyance is common among Windows users who work with multiple displays. Fortunately, Windows 11 includes a setting designed to reduce this frustration.

When enabled, Windows can remember where your application windows were placed before a monitor was disconnected and attempt to restore them when the display is reconnected.

Microsoft includes this capability within Windows 11's Multiple Displays settings, giving users a simple way to maintain a more consistent workspace when moving between desk setups, docking stations, and portable work environments.

Windows can remember window locations based on monitor connections and restore them after reconnecting external displays.

You open an important spreadsheet on Monday morning and immediately notice that several numbers, formulas, or worksheets look different.

The workbook was updated while you were away, but figuring out exactly what changed can take time.

Here's a Cool Tip: Ask Copilot to catch you up on Excel workbook changes.

Excel has long offered tools for reviewing changes, but those logs can become difficult to navigate in busy shared workbooks.

Microsoft has added a Copilot capability that lets you ask questions about workbook changes in plain language and receive summaries of recent activity.

Instead of searching through long lists of edits, you can ask Copilot to explain what happened and highlight the most important updates.

Have you ever received a pop-up warning that your computer is infected, followed by a phone number to call for help?

According to Microsoft, this is one of the most common technical support scams.

Scammers often pretend to be Microsoft or another well-known technology company and claim your device has a serious problem, then pressure you to pay for unnecessary services or provide remote access to your computer.

If you receive an unexpected call, email, or pop-up claiming to be from tech support, do not click links, call the number provided, or grant access to your device.

Instead, close the message and contact the company directly using information from its official website.

The most important rule to remember is simple: legitimate tech companies generally do not initiate unsolicited contact to tell you your computer is infected.

A healthy dose of skepticism can save you money, protect your personal information, and keep your devices secure.
