Disable Wi-Fi Assist in iOS 9 to Avoid a Nasty Surprise

iOS 9
Apple Users Learn the Law of Unintended Consequences

A new feature in Apple's iOS 9 meant to help users get better performance can have serious consequences for users with limited data plans.

Wi-Fi Assist lets the iPhone switch to regular cellular data service when the Wi-Fi connection is poor.

Sounds good, right?

But it can be a disaster if you have a limited data plan and the phone switches over to cellular data during heavy streaming like watching a Netflix movie or listening to steaming music like Apple Music or Pandora.

The phone does not warn users when the phone makes the switch.

Uh oh.

Users can disable the feature by going to "Settings", "Cellular" and then scroll down to "Wi-Fi Assist" to toggle it on or off.

iOS 9 Wi-Fi Assist

Turn the feature off if you don't want to have a nasty data charge on your phone bill.

Enjoy!

Blocking Calls on Your Smart Phone - Throw Back Tip

Throw Back Tip - One Cool Tip
Getting unwanted calls on your smart phone can be very annoying.

We showed you some tricks earlier this year on how to minimize getting calls in the first place as well as technical details on how to set your phone to reject calls.

Let's look at them again.

Smart Phone Call Blocking

A major annoyance to almost everyone is unwanted telemarketing calls.  Sometimes they are for alarm systems, vacation property or home repairs.  Other times they are from legitimate charities seeking donations.  But they always seem to come at the wrong time.  Is there ever really a good time?

There are a couple of options to minimizing unwanted calls:

  1. Register your phone number with the national Do Not Call Registry from the FCC - Federal Communications Commission (https://www.donotcall.gov/).  Legitimate marketers will cease calling your number usually 31 days after registration.
  2. Check if your state also has a Do Not Call registry.  For example, Missouri residents can register phone numbers with the state of Missouri at https://ago.mo.gov/divisions/consumer/no-call  To find out if your state has a list too, Google your state name and Do Not Call registry.
  3. Create a Contact - For callers you know but may not want to answer, for example, a fundraising call from a local charity you support.  Once you have received a call from their number, add a contact entry in your phone's contact list.  That way, when the call comes in, you'll see the call listed by the name and can decide if you want to answer the call,
To block a specific number from ringing on your smart phone, use these following instructions.

iPhone
To block specific phone numbers, you can do it two ways:
  1. If you've a received a call from a telemarketer, select the Phone app and then select the Recent call list.  To the right of the phone number you want to block, select the i within a circle icon that is to the right of the number.  Scroll up if needed and there'll be an option to "Block this Caller".  That number will now be blocked on this phone.
  2. If the number you want belongs to a contact on your phone, go to Settings > Phone > Blocked.  Scroll to the bottom if needed and choose "Add New" to select the contact you wish to block.
Android
To block specific phone numbers, you can do it two ways:
  1. From the call log, select the number you want to block by selecting the 3-dot menu in the upper right-hand corner and select "Add to reject list".  This will block future calls from this number.
  2. For a specific number, go to Phone app > Call Rejection > Auto Reject List.  Enter the exact number to block.
Note: Android devices can be inconsistent on this feature and it may not be as simple as these instructions.

If you should inadvertently answer a telemarketing call, remember to be nice.  It's someone's mother or brother trying to make a living.  But be firm and request they remove you from their call list.  And need be, you can block their number.

Enjoy!

Do Things Faster in the New Microsoft Word 2016

Did you upgrade to Office 2016 yet?

Microsoft's Office suite of popular software, including Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook, updated this week with many new features and improvements.

Users who have subscriptions to Office for home or business can download updates to the latest 2016 versions.

One new feature in Word 2016 to get things done faster is Tell Me What You Want to Do.

MS Word 2016 Tell Me What You Want To Do

Look for the words in the top ribbon menu.  This is a text box where you can enter the phrase about what you want to do.

For example, in Microsoft Word 2016, typing "Create a table" will display the Add Table menu where you can easily set the number of rows and columns you want for your table.

This new feature makes using the powerful features of Microsoft Word much easier.  As the software grows more complex, using natural language search requests allows users to quickly accomplish their desired tasks.

How to See Your Uber Passenger Rating

UBER
Find the Secret Number Uber Has Been Hiding From You

Have you used Uber?

It's a great alternative to using taxis or walking.

Uber cars are summoned by using a mobile app and the drivers come to your location.

Cars generally are cleaner and drivers are friendlier.  In part, because every user can rate every trip and driver as part of the Uber experience on a scale of 1 to 5.  When users summon a driver, their score is shown.  It's all about giving Uber customers information.

What is less known is that drivers rate passengers too.  So before a driver accepts a passenger, the driver has information too.

But unlike rating systems like Ebay, the passenger ratings have been unavailable to view by Uber users.

Until now.

So what is your number?

Here's how to find out:

- Open the Uber app.
- Select "Help" from the left-hand menu
- Select "Account"
- Select "I'd Like to Know My Rating"
Uber Account Passenger Rating Screen

- When the request appears, select "Submit"

Uber Account Passenger Rating Screen - Request

Your passenger rating will be the emailed to you.

Enjoy.
